Wreckers is located in a truly stunning water’s edge trading position, directly overlooking the harbour and surrounding coastline of the historic and highly popular tourist haunt of Charlestown. The harbour village of Charlestown was a Georgian “new town”, a port development planned by local landowner Charles Rashleigh which was built between 1790 and 1810 for the export of copper and china clay. Throughout the 19th Century the little dock was packed with ships and the harbourside sheds and warehouses utilised for boat building, rope making, brickworks, lime burning, pilchard curing etc.
Charlestown is located approximately two miles from St. Austell, just off the main A390 trunk route. It is one of Cornwall’s finest and most fascinating coastal locations and has largely escaped development in recent years and is proud to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As you enter the village you are transported back in time with the sight of a small fleet of square riggers at anchor in the Grade II Listed harbour, reminiscent of a bygone year. The port has played its part in many TV series and movies including “Poldark”, “Hornblower” and “The Onedin Line” to mention just a few. The harbour has a unique history and geography and remains a vibrant working port with its classic tall ships, Shipwreck and Heritage Centre, beautiful beaches and great places to eat and drink whilst enjoying the breathtaking views and atmosphere.
The premises are believed to date back to the late 1700s when they were originally a boathouse. In more recent years, the property has been totally renovated and refurbished to provide a stunning 60 cover restaurant of immense charm and character with modern commercial kitchen and fantastic south facing trade patio with breathtaking views out across the harbour and coastline beyond. In addition, to the rear of the restaurant is a separate lock-up retail shop unit which operates as a delicatessen with charming sales shop, kitchen/preparation area, stockroom and office. Both units are presented to a particularly high standard throughout and a viewing appointment is essential to fully appreciate the unique water’s edge location, appeal and quality of this reputable and most profitable coastal catering concern.
